My 1000 rounds of 45LC from Georgia Arms showed up today. After ringing my doorbell, UPS left the boxes sitting on the front steps in the rain. Luckily I was home.

Not to bust your balls TA, as this type of advice is pretty common on GIM. This POV assumes one has almost unlimited funds for ammo, excluding PM purchases and other preps, plus the cost of keeping a functional household. I don't see the logic of keeping an ammo stash suitable for Khe-San, or Rourke's Drift. If things really go south, it's likely you'll be dead, long before you come close to exhausting your supplies. My rough goals are a thousand rounds per caliber (in my case, 8 different ones), excluding .22 LR, which I'd go to 10,000.

Maybe we can have a mod sticky a "BUY NOW" thread up at the top, we can all periodically check in and tail the end of it and read what others have found.

We could call it Ammo Field Reports

Hint hint!!

I'm mostly in agreement with this. I'm not sure I want to be hanging around long in a world where I actually need to shoot other people using ALL the ammo I have. Granted, I'm glad I got what I did when I did, because getting anything lately is a joke.

I'm looking at much of my ammo supply the same way I look at my PMs (or would, if I had any)... as a wealth preserver. I don't see ammo getting any cheaper or more available anytime soon, so I figure I can unload some for a good chunk of change if I need to.

Our household owns just the one Taurus revolver. We're two old farts who are not going to be in the trenches if TEOTWAWKI comes down. We just want to protect ourselves from home invaders for so long as we're able. Why would I want a thousand rounds? Because I want to be able to go to the range to practice (and because I like the social interaction with the folks I find there.) But ammo has been in short supply around here and I don't see the point in using mine up at the range when I don't know how/where to replace it.

Now that I have my 1000-round stash, I can feel comfortable going to the range. If I use up 25 or 50 rounds, I'll still have plenty left, for a while anyway.

So, I'm not really arithmetic challenged or stupid. I realize that, at the rate of 50 rounds a week, my stash would be gone in only 20 weeks. But at least it's a start. And when I've gone through one of my two boxes of canned heat, I'll start looking for more.

Merlin, from what I understand, .45 LC is pretty easy to reload, using basic equipment and would be very cost effective in your case. I'm not a reloader, but plenty of folks on GIM are.

I don't reload, as I shoot mainly 9mm and .38 spl. It used to be, one could buy this fairly cheap, but nowadays, I'm starting to think about reloading!

When you add in shipping, 1000 rounds of .45LC cost me $535, which works out to $0.54 every time I pull the trigger. In my book, going to the range is still an expensive hobby. By the time you buy a few paper targets, rent your space on the range for a half hour and pay for, say, 50 rounds, you've spent nearly $40 for 30 minutes entertainment/practice. Where do I go to learn the art of reloading?

Ask around any gun range or better join
a local club, and you will find people more than
happy to help and show you.

But beware If you ask 10 people "What is the best
load for a given caliber,,, You will get 11 answers....
No gun is the same in a given caliber, what works
best in one. May not be for another.
That is one of the cool things about reloading you
can tune you reloads for you gun.

Just a thought..

Stopped in the local Walmart today to pick up a few boxes of 9mm and no luck they were all out?

Scored at my Walmart this evening...

I picked up some 30-30, 9 mm, and 38 spcl +P JHP.

They had 40 S&W in Blazer brass, Rem and Winch! Of course I don't own the first gun in this caliber.....

There was even a crate of stuff to be put out yet and I noticed some boxes marked "ORM D", so tomorrow's report may be good as well.

There really isn't much to it. And 45LC is one of the easiest to reload. With a turret press: #1 seat the case in the shellholder and pull the press handle down to both resize the case and pop out he old primer, during the upstroke of the handle you place a primer in the cup with your left hand and it squeezes into the case at the end of the motion. #2 again press the handle down and now the case is automatically lined up by the press with the hollow expander die to flare the case mouth slightly and drop a load of gunpowder into the case (then lower the handle to cycle the press to the next position), #3 place a bullet by hand into the flared case mouth and pull the handle one last time. The bullet is seated and the case is crimped. Done! Remove the loaded cartridge and start the next one. I can do two per minute taking my good ole time, lotsa other can people do three per minute. About 15 cents per cartridge for 45LC using all retail components including lead bullets. You can get a good setup for about $200.

Yep..
That is a single stage I'm guessing..
with a toy like the Dillon RL550b
you can turn out a round for every crank of the
handle..
Handgun ammo 45APC easy 300-400 hour
Rifle about the same ,,
But you need good hand-eye coordination
and you will be moving non stop doing it..l

No problem ........I certainly respect your points as they are very much valid.

Aside for the abilty to be a warehouse for Patriots in the coming dark days ...... I really got a massive hang up about not having items I deem essential in close proximity.

Honestly speaking (if you are open to crazy talk)........ I think I died in another life because I was in need of something rather simple and couldnt get to it in time.

When I was with my ex wife looking at houses the FIRST question out my mouth to RE agent was HOW FAR AWAY IS LEVEL I TRAMUA CENTER?? HOW FAR AWAY ARE THE ESSENTIAL SERVICES (Fire,Sanitation,Grocery etc)

When get in my head something is essential I HORDE THAT SH!T TO NO END.

Hey man, if stockpiling huge amounts of ammo is good for you, who am I to say otherwise? No disrespect intended. I just search for balance in my life, which can be very difficult these days! There are many folks, you included that are doing that and I respect them for their beliefs. I just look at my abilities (and lack thereof!) and think that if my position is compromised by a large armed group, I'm not going to be able to hold them off for so long, no matter how much ammo I hold. At best, it will only be 3 of us capable for defense, me, my daughter and her husband-to-be.

I've thought this out and think that my position on ammo strikes a reasonable balance. In a perfect world, it would be nice to have enough to make the floor buckle, but realistically, it ain't gonna happen. I've invested some of the FRNs I might have put into ammo, into NBC defense (gas masks, rad detection, decon gear, etc).

Being in a safe spot away from the cities and being self sufficient is far more important than hoarding 10 zillion rounds of 9mm.
I'll tell you what will be priceless.. Being set up on 200 acres with an endless supply of water and food. Well away from the zombie hoards so you won't have to use your guns in the first place.

I put in an order for a spam can of 7.62X54R from J&G Sales four days ago. On their website, it said they were 14 days behind on orders. They have yet to even charge my credit card, so it's a true story. My spam can ordered from Classic Arms took 11 days from order to arrival, so we'll see how long J&G takes. J&G is also $30.00 cheaper overall than Classic, mainly because of proximity.
